Vusukinawaqa – The Sacred Homeland
Vusukinawaqa is the traditional homeland and ancestral headquarters of Yavusa Dalitaulevu, whose descendants are today primarily associated with Naocobau Village, in the Tikina (District) of Nakorotubu, Province of Ra, Fiji.
Meaning of the Name
Vusukinawaqa combines Vusu (to gather, unite, bring together), Ki (a connecting expression of movement or joining), and Waqa (canoe or vessel — in Fijian tradition also representing a people, a journey, protection, and leadership). Together, the name reflects a sacred place where people were united under one chiefly authority and prepared for the journeys of future generations.
Our Sacred Oral Tradition
For generations, elders have preserved the oral tradition that Vusukinawaqa was the spiritual, cultural, and political centre of the yavusa — the place from which leadership was exercised, customs were protected, and identity was maintained long before later migrations throughout Nakorotubu.
